How to Use This Calculator

This tool models a simple buy-and-hold scenario for physical germanium metal. Enter the total amount you plan to invest in euros. The buy price per kilogram is automatically populated from the latest available market price when data is accessible. You can override this value if you have a specific dealer quote or expect to pay a different premium.

Set your target sell price to reflect the price per kilogram at which you anticipate selling. The difference between buy and sell price drives the gross return. Storage costs, expressed as an annual percentage of the initial investment, account for secure warehousing, insurance, and handling fees. A typical range for physical precious and specialty metals storage is 1% to 2.5% per year.

The holding period slider lets you model scenarios from 1 to 20 years. Longer holding periods increase cumulative storage costs, which erode returns. The break-even price indicates the minimum sell price per kilogram needed to recover both the original investment and all storage costs over the selected period.

Assumptions and Limitations

This calculator uses a static sell price assumption. In practice, germanium prices fluctuate based on supply-demand dynamics, geopolitical factors, and industrial consumption patterns. The model does not account for dealer bid-ask spreads, which can range from 5% to 15% depending on the counterparty and transaction size.

Storage costs are modeled as a flat annual percentage. Actual storage fees vary by provider, location, quantity, and insurance coverage. Some dealers offer all-inclusive storage programs; others charge separately for vault space, insurance, and periodic inspection. Transaction costs for buying and selling physical germanium are not included in this model and should be factored into any real investment analysis.

The annualized return calculation assumes a single purchase at the beginning of the holding period and a single sale at the end. It does not model dollar-cost averaging, partial sales, or reinvestment of any proceeds. Tax implications vary by jurisdiction and are not reflected in the results.

Educational Tool Only

It does not constitute financial advice, investment advice, or a recommendation to buy or sell germanium or any other asset. Actual investment outcomes will differ from these projections. Germanium is an illiquid, speculative commodity with no exchange-traded market. Always consult a qualified financial advisor before making any investment decision.
